Hannes Leitgeb: Indicative Conditionals and Metacognition

This talk deals with an analysis of the mental process that is described by "(rational) agent S accepts the indicative conditional A -> B". We are going to consider three theses about this type of process:

(i) An indicative conditional is (subjectively) acceptable for a rational agent S if and only if S holds a belief in that conditional.
(ii) The mental state (of S) that corresponds to the acceptability (for S) of an indicative conditional can only be implemented by symbolic computation.
(iii) S's accepting an indicative conditional is necessarily a metarepresentational mental process within.

The main point of the talk will be to show that each of these three theses is false.
