Ardis Eschenberg-Bad Moccasin: The role of the linguist in language revitalization

As so many minority languages face endangerment today, the role of the  linguist in language revitalization can be vital for their documentation and survival.  Linguists interface with endangered language communities in many ways, from superficial correspondence to lasting relationships.  Their contributions can range from documentation to production of pedagogical materials to work within communities directly with language programs.  This paper discusses these possible roles and the ways a linguist can maximize their impact on language revitalization movements through production of materials accessible to communities.  Samples of the author's work in the field are presented, as well as current projects. 

The author has worked directly in the Omaha community for 9 years, helping with community language efforts and serving as Academic Dean at the tribal college.
