Thema: Neuronal oscillations as correlates of distinct aspects of linguistic performance

Abstract:
In the talk I will argue for a relation of various brain oscillations to different aspects of word and sentence processing. In particular, the concept of neuronal synchronization in the sense of an exact temporal tuning of neuronal activity within different EEG-frequencies will be elucidated. As an example, evidence for a physiological reality of certain linguistic categories such as concrete and abstract nouns could only be found in higher frequency bands of the EEG signals. Instantaneous phase estimation allows for demonstrating that information transfer is slower for concrete nouns possibly due to multiple semantic resources used, and that the direction of information transfer between hemispheres differs for word categories.
Different aspects of sentence processing (e.g., attention, working memory, thematic role assignment, semantic-pragmatic and syntactic analysis) seem to be reflected by synchronization networks within different frequency bands, too. Neuronal information transfer via frequency coding is possibly one of the mechanisms which facilitate parallel processing within the brain, since a single signal may contain different aspects of information within various frequency ranges.

Zur Person:
Sabine Weiss studierte Humanbiologie, Linguistik und Medizin an der Universität Wien und schloss ihr Studium mit einem Diplom an der Neurologischen Universitätsklinik Wien 1991 ab. Drei Jahre später wurde sie mit einer Dissertation über das EEG als Korrelat mentaler Prozesse am dortigen Institut für Neurophysiologie promoviert, worauf sie ein Visiting Postdoctoral Fellowship an der University of California at San Diego annahm.
Von 1996 bis 2001 kehrte sie als wiss. Angestellte ans Institut für Neurophysiologie der Universität Wien zurück. Von 2001 bis 2006 wurde ihr die Leitung des Herta-Firnberg-Projekts "Funktionelle kortikale Netzwerke während der Sprachwahrnehmung" an der Medizinischen Universität Wien übertragen. Parallel dazu war sie 2003/4 als wissenschaftliche Angestellte im SFB "Situierte künstliche Kommunikatoren" der Universität Bielefeld tätig. Derzeit ist sie Lektorin und wiss. Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Kognitionswissenschaft der Universität Osnabrück. Sabine Weiss ist durch zahlreiche Publikationen in renommierten internationalen Fachzeitschriften, vielfältige Buchbeiträge und Lexikonartikel ausgewiesen und zählt zu den führenden Köpfen in der Psycho-Neurolinguisitk.
